Tweets from an Israeli Soldier Part 4

"Tweeting your experiences of a war, is a strategy for attracting new twitter followers ...."

This tongue-in-cheek tweet by our "Israeli Soldier" as I called him here and here and here, made me suddenly realise that my trying to protect his "privacy" was actually quite silly since I too had discovered him in this very public twitter sphere. @Gidon Shaviv obviously never meant to "hide" and probably even likes being tweeted at...;)

I'm running late again; squirrelling away his pearls meaning to post them as they come but then letting my innate tendency to procrastination take over. And so now, the chronology I meant to respect is shot to pieces like the illusion that HAMAS love their children more than they hate Israel.

To Gidon Shaviv these must feel like a little life time away:

C'mon guys I'm in the middle of a war. Stop inviting me to play Candy Crush.

Speaking of downtime, thank you to a certain kibbutz that opened its pool to a few hundred miluimnickim.

Just to point out, my wife at home with three kids, sirens, cancelled kindergartens etc, is working much harder than I am...

I've been sleeping in a tent in the desert for the last 5 days...

The trick in using the mobile toilets the ISF kindly provided, is to never, ever look down or breathe...

Those cardboard targets never saw it coming

I've never been this long without. Seeing my kids. My five year old in her love of drama, asked my wife what her father's (me) name was...

I've said it before. Stop firing rockets at civilians would seem a fairly low bar for peace...

Retweet: The notion that Israel would be more justified in striking Hamas terrorists trying to kill Israelis if Hamas were better at murder is vile.

Can't the world spare just a little moral outrage for those intentionally firing rockets at civilians?

It's been a week since we've been called up. I don't mind staying much longer, so long as we put an end to the reality of rocket fire.

Hamas uses BBC brand for fauxtography propaganda ‪http://wp.me/p2tuZQ-2SL

Weirdly enough you CAN spell cease fire without the word Rocket.

Heart shaped cookies The note is "a big loving hug, lizi, Mili and Nava"

Yay!!! Package from my wife arrives!!

I really don't deserve my wife...

judging by drawings my kids sent on the package from home I just got, my daughters "kitty" phase is not yet over.

There must be a cease fire, because only two rockets have landed near me today.

From Lior the Israeli dairy farmer, now soldier "Israel have no fear, us dairy farmers will protect you" it's 5 am...

Lior- normally a dairy farmer, currently an Israeli reservist

Thank you Adam Roth from Florida! Your package arrived and is much appreciated by the soldiers of my unit. Pls RT.

Retweet: Rather sick fake feed claiming to be that of Oron Shaul, the IDF soldier Hamas claims it's holding.

25. july 2014

I'm afraid I will have to decline celebrating the day of rage with you. My son and I have already booked a day of tickles.

On the way home for Shabbat!!!

Finally on a bus headed to Jerusalem

So I took some of the candy people donated from the base to give my kids as a gift when I got home...

Shavua Tov. Had a great Shabbat at home. Getting organized and will soon head back.

Amount of love I received over the weekend was overwhelming. Thank you everyone.

Will state that the conversation with my five year old daughter about war was somewhat of an eye opener.

How so?

.@shootersix bc she clearly does understand that her father might die...

I got to see one of the exposed terror tunnels today. All I can say is that these things are deadly, and we must MUST deal with this threat.

I have started to read a few of the nasty tweets Gidon Shaviv gets; one particularly vile comment came from a female whose twitter profile I looked up. Her description of self contained all the prerequisite clichés like Peace, Free-Palestine, working for "charities", love, children and the usual must have fashion accessories for a compassionista. Yet the her attack on our soldier and her twitter ID picture (hooked-nose Jew as octopus with swastika on Israeli flag)violently contradicted her masturbatory auto-biography. She seems to spread her poison from London and appears to be a stale left over from the Flotilla Boats of "We con the world" infamy.

Gidon's response:

@gazaboatconvoy I apologize that Jews have become competent at preventing their own murder

it is clearly Israel's actions, that are causing the masses to search for any Jew, and show their outrage.

I don't think nasty compassionistas do irony, no wonder she hates the Jews.

Hey where are the pics of me in a terror tunnel?? Oh I wasted all my phone battery arguing with haters on twitter... Sorry :)

As one of my favourite writers, Daniel Greenfield (aka Sultan Knish said:

"…The world as a whole, not just the occasional liberal brat, will continue being disappointed in Israel for not having magically and non-violently resolved the dilemma of people shooting at it no matter what it does. After all there's already a book titled, "How to Make Peace in the Middle East in Six Months or Less" on the shelf. Why not just read it and do what it says?"

How many layers of irony to fact that anti-war rally in Tel Aviv dispersed by police due to incoming rocket sirens?

Why is nobody commenting on the fact that these rallies happen only in Tel Aviv, not Sderot, Ashdod, etc.?

Gidon: @Marc_Leibowitz forget Ashdod. Name one, just one, peace rally in Palestinian city. @NTarnopolsky

Silly Hamas. A ceasefire doesn't normally mean that you continue firing rockets at civilians... #hamasarenotfiveyearolds

"Poor Yaseen Al Kilani. Hamas says he was killed three times." good read http://feedly.com/e/W7uh4tFx

Sleeping in APC

keeping your boots on as a courtesy to your fellow sleepers ;) ?

I think I can guess the age of each reservist by the style of his combat boots. ;-)

The question is, why aren't you sleeping?

On the radio they announce the names of the soldiers killed today. The hitchhiker behind me bursts into tears. Just found out a friend died.

Pointed out that when we were called up there was full moon. I suspect I will see the next full moon still in uniform.

Tears for Israel

I will resist the tempting comparison with rats, in deference to the genuine rodents, but crawling through UN/Iran-financed tunnels in order to kidnap, torture, rape, mutilate, murder and destroy everything of beauty:....HAMAS YOU AND YOUR KIND ARE SAVAGES and your "supporters" are beneath contempt.

Yes, I too cried :(

Remember Khaybar

This man is worth listening to.

How did Mohamed die?

Plus ça change plus ça reste la même chose...

France: Hamas v. Jews

The defenders of Hamas in Sarcelles:

I would like to add that this report comes from France's State Media, whose default position is very pro-Arab/Islam. They belong to the media whom I blame in great parts for the rising Jew-hatred and the misreporting on "Gaza", where Israel is defending itself against sustained Rocket attacks from the   the Terrorist regime of Hamas. So, things must be very bad in France, when even RTL are being fair in their reporting.

French Jews defending their  Synagogue in Sarcelles:

(thank you Vlad)

This is an energetic group of  young French Jews, La Ligue de Defense Juive , who are fighting back, sometimes  physically. They are also an excellent source for the kind of  information which is being held back by the main French media.

In  physical confrontations they are usually very inferior in numbers (the old David Goliath story) to the Arab/Muslim/sub-Saharan and leftist thugs who are attacking them, but they will fight. So, of course, they have been accused of being "extreeeeeeeme right wing and violent" as has anyone who does not run away from thugs and who does  not call themselves "Antifascist" "Anti-Racist" "Pro-Palestinian" "Pro-Human-Rights" and all those fashionable euphemisms which try to hide (and often succeed) the real violence driving those groups.

Personally, I am glad that neither the Jews of France,  nor Israel are "taking it" any longer.

To quote one of my favorite writers, Daniel Greenfield (aka Sultan Knish):

"…The world as a whole, not just the occasional liberal brat, will continue being disappointed in Israel for not having magically and non-violently resolved the dilemma of people shooting at it no matter what it does. After all there's already a book titled, "How to Make Peace in the Middle East in Six Months or Less" on the shelf. Why not just read it and do what it says?"

While our young Jews above might be brave, and love their France, I have heard some better renditions of the Marseillaise (to be fair though, my friends below have had a little 'technical' assistance ;)

An Open Letter to Critics of Israel

At the moment I do post a lot about Israel, more than usual. I do that  for 2 reasons:

1. The media coverage is soooooooooooooooo unbalanced and is inciting such alarmingly violent Jew-hatred in Europe that it  throws long shadows back onto a very dark age. I want to put at least a pebble - be it ever so small - on the other side of the scales.

2. What plays out in Israel/Gaza at the moment is a fight between David and Goliath and, as counter intuitive as this might seem, it is Israel who is the David

Israel's fallen Soldiers R.I.P.

We mourn the loss of these brave soldiers of Tsahal, killed by terrorists from Hamas during operation safe borders (Protective Edge?) and honour their memory.

On her Face book, the top Israeli model, Bar Refaeli posted this:

On day 17 of Operation Secure Borders (Protective Edge?), and on the 7th day of the ground invasion, 32 Israeli soldiers have been killed during anti-terrorism operations in Gaza. (from LeMondejuif.info)

Nearly "no comment"

extremely confronting video.

The funeral director should perhaps have taken off the suicide belt...

I just see that this video has been deleted. "They" do hate humiliation. The video showed the funeral procession of males only (it being a muslim burial) - the shouts of "Allah-u-akbar" breaking the sound-barrier - until the coffin itself EXPLODES - and everyone screeching and screaming and ducking for cover.  As I said :  "the funereal director should perhaps have token off the suicide belt".

As George Brassens says:
"Quand on est con on est con"

Who is killing the Palestinians in Gaza?

Remember this one? (Warning: confronting Pictures and Video) The victims were arguably "Palestinians". The killers?  HAMAS? PALESTINIANS?  SAME THING?

^^^That happened nearly two years ago. The video below is an excellent roundup of what is happening right now, in Gaza.

UN = Human Rights Violators?

In a body who has not only been empowering  the most "efficient" violators of  Human Rights, but who has been an increasingly eager participant in the pack rape of the meaning of "Human Rights", one lonely voice stands out: that of Hillel Neuer, the Executive Director of UN Watch.

Just have a look at what kind of representatives want him silenced and Israel wiped from the face of the earth. Yes "wiped from the face of the earth" is a tacky cliché of the "purple prose" kind,  but words to that effect are in the charter of the Terrorist Organisation HAMAS, who these days seems to be the darling of the Left, the Greens and the hordes of  violent thugs who are, at this very moment attacking, Jewish people, shops, Synagogues,  in the streets of Paris, Berlin, London,  Sydney.

But even HAMAS, extreme islamists and assorted Terror organisations are a cut above of what the UN has become today in that they at least are not as hypocritical - they say it out straight:

"We Want All  Jews Dead!"

I think the UN and its affiliates should be indicted for Human Rights Violations, if that does not work they should be disbanded and if neither of those two suggestions are implemented then it's high time they transfer their HQ to Teheran.

Look, Listen, Learn

Pat Condell recorded this some time ago but it certainly has not reached its use-by date yet.

And these are the "people" (in HAMAS's case I use "people" as a euphemism) that are "favoured" over Israel by some very contemptible non-Menschen in the West? Just listen to those peace-loving  "victims" of Big Bad Israel:

Anyone who,  after hearing these clearly stated aims,  still dares to  compare the terrorism waged by  HAMAS on Israel with this country's self-defence is either  dangerously and terminally  stupid or truly evil.

Postcards from an Israeli Soldier part 3

This is Number 3 in the series of tweets I post from "our Israeli Solder".  If you have not met him yet, look  here for No. 1 and here for No. 2.   I don't do his tweets justice - time, space, attention spans are short and so I each time I collect his tweets, I'm faced with a kind of "Sophie's Choice" because I like them all.  I go looking for his tweets first thing in my Australian morning and when, one day, there were none, I got "worried". Virtuality has become quite real:  for me "Gidon"  represents Israel, and I am concerned for this embattled yet so brave little country.

This morning I found this, posted by someone who was obviously not on the side of Israel:

"I suggest that we will install #Israel on the moon....ok?" he goaded.

Gidon:  "Well Israeli spacecraft will land there soon. Because we use our rockets for things other than killing civilians".

Touché ! Yayyyyyyy :)

14. July 2014

I've had some 700 new followers since I was called up for #OperationProtectiveEdge. There have been over 1000 rockets at Israel. Just saying.

Lots of pro-Palestinian new followers. Hope they learn that even as we fight we do not hate the people of Gaza. But the rockets will stop.

I'm not really pro Israel or pro palestine. I'm pro stopping rockets from being fired at children. I guess that does make me pro Israeli.

 Retweeted by Gidon
"An Israel Soldier Giving Goodbye kiss to his kid
before leaving for the war

Just spent an hour cleaning the gun and fixing up the rest of the equipment. Don't tell my wife, that I know how to clean!

I remember seeing some very poignant tweets from our soldier about his children where he said  that he had never been away this long from the littlies. I  remember reading a quote from  one of them asking what daddy's name was. Have spent a long time yesterday, looking for these pearls, could not find them but found this instead, the way Israelis prepare their children for relative  safety from the HAMAS bombs. Apparently this song was written by a teacher a few years ago...so how long have HAMAS fired rockets at Israeli Kindergartens already?

I did find this tweet about his boy from 15 July:

My son (2) calls me early in the Morning to tell me to come home ...

A retweet:

@Gidon son drew 4 u & chevra. Chayal shooting projectile. Words on building behind 'Anachnu mitpalelim sachem'

9. July 2014:

Red alert right now. Above my head. Sound like it was intercepted.

Unending noise from planes overhead

It's 36 degrees Celsius here. Hot.

This says it all: Hamas instructs Gaza residents to ignore IDF warnings, refuse to evacuate buildings targeted by Israel Air Force.

15th July 2014

Keep reminding myself. If terrorists attack, first deal with that threat, and only after can you stop and tweet about it

It's actually a lovely night for guard duty in the desert. Lots of stars. Quiet, except for the occasional plane/ helicopter

Hive mind : there is a quote I remember but can't place: men left alone with guns at night have strange thoughts. Who said it?

A retweet:

Emily Dickinson gravestone temporarily visible w.o. obstruction during fence #preservation in #AmherstMA last summer

@Gidon: Thanks for RT. Glad (1) you found charger (2) you have time for poetry in midst of somber circumstances

Gidon: If not during war, then when? @CitizenWald

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land

And on the strangest sea;

Yet, never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

Today is the fast of 17 Tammuz, marking the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem 2000y ago. Today we fight for safety of the Jewish state.

Retweet: @CiFWatch

· BBC continues to promote theme of “homemade” rockets

Reading some papers description of Hamas rockets, it seems the journalist believe Hamas is bombing Israel with giant Hello Kitty dolls..

The area around Gaza is really quite beautiful

·#OperationProtectiveEdge is slowly moving from the soldiers wanting free pizza phase, to the wanting clean underwear phase.

"Can you spot the soldier?"

16th July 2014

The shirt that was too filthy to wear three days ago, is now the "clean" shirt of today. In the army dirt is a relative concept.

It's been a week since we've been called up. I don't mind staying much longer, so long as we put an end to the reality of rocket fire.

A humanitarian cease fire is as great time to sit atoning and wait for the Hamas to break the ceasefire.

Geez who would have guessed that a terror organization doesn't respect humanitarian cease fires?

· The Hamas never miss an opportunity to screw up life for the Palestinians.

So using my night vision scope I was watching a hedgehog in a field for 5 min. I've never seen a live one in Israel before.

Water container through my night vision scope on my gun.

Talk about things going bang in the night... Finished patrol where every minute something exploded.

18th July 2014

It has been over a week since I've been called up. I've no regrets. This war was forced upon us, and we will prevail against terror.

No hatred of the people of Gaza, but we will not allow our citizens to be targeted by rockets and tunnels of terror.

This is an eminently justified war. Rockets must stop, tunnels must be neutralized.

Reports in Israeli media that UNRWA actually gave back to Hamas those rockets it hid in an UNRWA school. Speechless.

@ChrisGunness want to explain to Israelis why you gave Hamas back the rockets they hid in a school?

@HillelNeuer have you seen reports UNRWA gave the rockets they found in school back to Hamas ???

Look I'm not anti UN. But at least regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict it really should just admit it has no credibility.

What happened to the days when during war Leonard Cohen would come to IDF bases to sing for the troops? Leonard where art though?

Can't get more Israeli than sitting in army uniform, vest and gun, and eating Bamba.

A cake that arrived at base with this note..

Postcards from the Israeli Front 2

I promised to post tweets from "My Israeli Soldier" as they came to hand, I will, but I'm running late. The reason for that is that I started to feel a little  intrusive and wanted to ask his permission. While my  questions were on the voluble  side taking up three tweets at least, his answer fitted the image I had  formed of him via his tweets:

"No worries"

Yaaayyyyyyyy :)

His name is Gidon, the photo below  was taken on the 13. July 2014. He is a Lawyer, PhD candidate in International Law, Senior Research analyst, and as he said: "now I guess I am a soldier"

I want to make an unapologetic value judgement here:

Should something happen to this soldier at the hands of the HAMAS Terrorists, even the potential  lost would be many many many x many  times greater than if one of the terrorists met his 72 virgins prematurely.

I so often think about this, when I reflect on those "operating" Auschwitz...6 Million...what fraction of the great Potential they murdered?

On a beach chair, munching bagels and watching another unit doing a drill..

Incidentally he later tweeted about that photo:

My wife is a little angry about that photo of myself in a beach chair..Tells me if that is what I'm doing I should come home

After you rush your kids to a bomb shelter bc of rockets, any question of the justness of this operation is mute.

Pictures of my sleeping kids have been retweeted 119 times...
I guess they are just that cute...

9th July 2014

OK, charging phone + Shaver + Kindle (yeah!).

The modern version of the book and the scythe... An M16A3 and a kindle.

Man those boots haven't been polished since operation pillar of defence. Sigh. Will try and get a new pair on base.

Thanks for all the warm wishes. Just gave my sleeping kids a kiss, hug to my wife, and now my neighbour is driving me to the pickup spot.

Look I'm not complaining. Some 250 new followers, and all I've done so far is sit around and wait for a bus. Once the fighting starts...

A soldier saying goodbye to his fiancé. Soldier is a funny term. An hour ago he was just a guy watching tv.

Awwww his fiancé is crying... Man I have something in my eye...

One guy here claims him and his three brothers got called up tonight. My Facebook also suggests a major call up.

Weirdly, I'll be joining my cousin, and brother in law, both currently serving - and 12 years my younger...

My commander has yet to arrive. He SMS me what other than a book he should bring. I SMS back, clean underwear. The uniform affects humor.

The officer here is about ten years younger than I am. He studies law. I could be his lecturer next year. Yet here, he's the king...

I will stress the point. Most soldiers do very little for a great amount of time. Currently we are sitting waiting for a bus to pick us up.

First rule of being a soldier, doubly so a reservist. Don't believe rumours. No one knows what is going on.

I can relax. Based on the chatter every guy here is a potential general.

The nation of Brazil is falling apart because of 7 goals. The nation of Israel is uniting because of hundreds of rockets. Crazy world.

On the bus. I'm going to catch some sleep. I have a feeling this may be the last chance for a while.

Weirdly, this is exactly like the army. Three hours on the bus, and we've almost returned to where we started. Picking up soldiers.

Three am. Still on bus. Soldiers telling stories of past glories, wives and girlfriends, children and guns.

Follow ‪@cdlazear, the only other just called up reservist on this bus who tweets. The call up found him in the middle of a shot of whiskey

The brave soldier schweik is probably the best literary comparison at the moment.

I'm signing off for Shabbat. Shabbat shalom!
