In Australia, when our present (female socialist) Prime Minister gets the meaning of a word she uses wrong, her sisters at the Macquarie Dictionary jump to her assistance by simply widening its meaning as they did recently with the word "misogyny". Yup, we sure are a can-do country in matters linguistic, we don’t muck around in Oz, and never mind the etymology.
So, as the self-appointed guardians of what they incorrectly call Political Correctness will not give up a bone easily once they have hold of one, perhaps we should simply accept that a phobia can now have two meanings: a) pathological fear and b) rational fear. Like Sheik Yermami said “Having Islamophobia in Europe today is just as rational as having Icebergophobia on board the Titanic in 1912.”
Here is Pat Condell’s take on it and, as so often in his “topical rants“ - he hits so many nails on the head that all I can add is “hear hear” !
Hear Hear !
