Malala, then 15, was gravely wounded by masked gunmen who singled her out as she returned home in a school bus in Pakistan’s north-west Swat Valley.
The shooting sparked worldwide condemnation and Malala was flown to Britain for treatment. She recovered, in fact, she has recovered so well that she was able to give a speech at the UN in New York on her 16th birthday declaring that she has new courage to fight for the right of all children to have a free education.
I don't need to reproduce her speech here, it went around the world and caused many tears, some genuinely sentimental, some more camera-huggingly photogenic from the usual suspects parked on the seats at the UN. (UN=NationsUnitedAgainstTheOriginalMeaningOfHumanRights).
The reason that I post this here is that, like Jane Austen's universally acknowledged truth that a single man in possession of a good fortune was in want of a wife, so was I in want of a pretext to play a little parodic song about the Taliban. Weeelll, I think the excuse I needed came with this Talibanian apology to our heroine:
"Taliban attacked you, was it islamically correct or wrong, or you were deserved to be killed or not, I will not go in this argument now, let’s we leave it to Allah All mighty, He is the best judge (sic) ...."
So wrote Taliban commander Adnan Rasheed seen here in what I suspect to be a rather flattering photo:
"First of all please mind that Taliban never attacked you because of going to school or you were education lover, ...[snip]... Taliban believe that you were intentionally writing against them and running a smearing campaign to malign their efforts to establish Islamic system in swat and your writings were provocative".
Read the whole letter and watch the videos here, while I will cynically use this excuse to play the song before it will become a "truth universally acknowledged" that Osama Bin Laden was really a holy trinity of Hero+Victim+Messiah all rolled into one.
